When welcoming a new coworker, keep this in\u00a0mind.<\/h4>\n

On the first day of one of the first jobs I ever had coming out of college, a mentor of mine pulled me aside, and said to me\u2026<\/p>\n

\u201cClaire, take a look around the company. Take in everything you see and hear, what you think could be better, and write it all down. Don\u2019t forget that stuff. Since you\u2019re new here, you\u2019re going to see things that we\u2019re not going to see. You\u2019re going to turn over rocks and go, \u201cWhat\u2019s that? That\u2019s stupid.\u201d You\u2019ll question stuff that we\u2019ve just been assuming. You\u2019ve got fresh eyes\u200a\u2014\u200aand we need\u00a0that.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Years later, that concept still<\/em> sticks with me. As a business owner, I\u2019ve experienced firsthand the importance of seeing things with \u201cfresh eyes.\u201d Especially, as I\u2019ve begun to hire new folks. I\u2019ll explain my business process to them, and catch myself justifying \u201cthe way we do things\u201d because it\u2019s \u201cthe way we do things\u201d\u200a\u2014\u200anot because it\u2019s the right way. What good is that?<\/p>\n

The longer we do something, the more \u201cused to\u201d it we become. And the more \u201cused to\u201d it we become, the more details and nuances we stop seeing. Changing circumstances, changing market, changing competition, changing problems\u2026we develop blind spots when we get too \u201cused to\u201d running our own business.<\/p>\n

So we need fresh eyes. We need to seek out new perspectives on our business, particularly from the newest employees in the company.<\/p>\n

This is a tricky thing to do because new employees are often the ones who are least likely to speak up. The longer you are at a company, the more comfortable you feel in providing a dissenting opinion. But if you\u2019ve just joined the company last week, you don\u2019t want to rock the boat.<\/p>\n

To get this information from new folks, you\u2019ve got to actively seek it out. Ask yourself\u2026Who are the people in your company who have fresh eyes? What can you learn from them? What questions are you asking them?<\/p>\n

As a CEO, owner, or manager, if you want fresh eyes, you\u2019ve got to ask for it. Sit someone down. Tell them that they can bring something to the team that no one else can.<\/p>\n

Tell them you need their fresh eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n
