The question I always ask is, \u201c<em>What\u2019s one thing you wish you\u2019d learned earlier as a leader?<\/em>\u201d Here\u2019s what some of our recent interviewees had to say\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-leaders-don-t-need-to-know-it-all\"><strong>Leaders don\u2019t need to know it&nbsp;all.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a data-href=\"https:\/\/blog.knowyourcompany.com\/watch-our-lessons-for-leaders-the-heartbeat-interview-%EF%B8%8F-with-rob-walling-founder-of-drip-with-2ab41015f046\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.knowyourcompany.com\/watch-our-lessons-for-leaders-the-heartbeat-interview-%EF%B8%8F-with-rob-walling-founder-of-drip-with-2ab41015f046\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Rob Walling<\/strong><\/a><strong> is the co-founder of <\/strong><a data-href=\"https:\/\/www.drip.com\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.drip.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Drip<\/strong><\/a>, an email marketing automation software company that we in fact use at Canopy. What does Rob wish he\u2019d learned sooner? That it\u2019s okay for leaders to ask questions. He says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cI wish that I had learned that I didn\u2019t need all the answers as a leader. [I hire] people that are better than I am at something, and then when a problem comes up I can look around the room and say, \u2018I don\u2019t know. What do you think?\u2019\u201d\u200a\u2014\u200aRob Walling, co-founder of\u00a0Drip<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-embrace-failure\"><strong>Embrace failure.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.knowyourcompany.com\/watch-our-lessons-for-leaders-the-heartbeat-interview-%EF%B8%8F-with-aynn-collins-director-of-talent-d2918c5ad352\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-href=\"https:\/\/blog.knowyourcompany.com\/watch-our-lessons-for-leaders-the-heartbeat-interview-%EF%B8%8F-with-aynn-collins-director-of-talent-d2918c5ad352\"><strong>Aynn Collins<\/strong><\/a><strong> is the Director of Talent Strategy at <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mailchimp.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-href=\"https:\/\/mailchimp.com\/\"><strong>MailChimp<\/strong><\/a><strong>, <\/strong>the world\u2019s largest marketing automation platform with more than 900 employees. Aynn\u2019s advice to her younger self is to understand that failure is part of growing as a leader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cEmbracing failure and understanding how you learn and grow from those failures is what I would tell people to learn early in their career. They can own failures, talk about them, debrief with your team on\u2026and not try to just make everything shiny and pretty. Because we know business and leadership is not always perfect, and shiny and pretty.\u201d\u200a\u2014\u200aAynn Collins, Director of Talent Strategy at Mailchimp<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-forget-the-org-chart\"><strong>Forget the org&nbsp;chart.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.knowyourcompany.com\/watch-our-lessons-for-leaders-the-heartbeat-interview-%EF%B8%8F-with-dan-mall-founder-of-superfriendly-f0d7f87ab173\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-href=\"https:\/\/blog.knowyourcompany.com\/watch-our-lessons-for-leaders-the-heartbeat-interview-%EF%B8%8F-with-dan-mall-founder-of-superfriendly-f0d7f87ab173\"><strong>Dan Mall<\/strong><\/a><strong> is the founder of <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/superfriend.ly\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-href=\"http:\/\/superfriend.ly\/\"><strong>SuperFriendly<\/strong><\/a> (a design collaborative that\u2019s worked with clients such as Apple, Time Magazine and ESPN)<strong> and CEO of <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/superbooked.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-href=\"https:\/\/superbooked.com\/\"><strong>SuperBooked<\/strong><\/a> (a software application that helps people find creative work). For Dan, he wishes he\u2019d known that an organizational chart isn\u2019t the end-all, be-all of business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThe leaders aren\u2019t the ones at the top. They should be the ones at the bottom. They should be the one supporting everyone else\u2026They need to be able to see everything. They need to be able to support people.
