Matt\u2019s been named as one of the 50 Best CEOs among small and mid-sized businesses, as published in USA Today, which doesn\u2019t surprise me. I\u2019ve known Matt over the past few years, and have always admired his thoughtfulness and principled views. Praise is positive and helpful for encouraging your team \u2013 it but should come organically and not be forced.<\/li><li>Don\u2019t\n just recognize your team \u2013 recognize individuals. You don\u2019t want Lone \nWolf behavior, but at the same time you do not want people to feel \ninvisible.<\/li><li>Praise\n people during 1:1 meetings. In these settings, you can go into detail \nwhy you value their work, and how they have contributed to the overall \ngoals of the company.<\/li><li>Use\n group meetings to your advantage. When you\u2019re in a group, you can \nhighlight and publicly praise people that have made progress since last \nmeeting. This helps establish what \u201cgood work\u201d looks like to the entire \nteam.<\/li><li>Place\n a \u201ckudos\u201d system in a digital communication channel (e.g. Slack) where \ngood work is recognized. (Note, this can come across as disingenuous in \nsome companies, so it\u2019s something to ask your team if they\u2019d enjoy it, \nor test it out before committing.)<\/li><li>Make sure praise comes from peers \u2013 not just managers. Encourage your team to praise one another.<\/li><li>Keep\n in mind that tangible gifts (e.g. money or vouchers) can backfire and \noffend some people who find it transactional \u2013 but also really motivate \nothers. In this situation, it\u2019s best to ask people what they prefer on a\n individual basis.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Ideas for things to say when you\u2019re not sure how to praise people:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>\u201cI\n like the way you\u2019ve been showing up lately. I don\u2019t care about the \nmistakes; you already know what they are. I love how you\u2019ve been taking \naccountability for them.\u201d<\/li><li>\u201cThanks for helping me with X. I had no idea how to execute all of it, and I would have been up a creek without you.\u201d<\/li><li>\u201cYou taught me something I didn\u2019t know today. Well done.\u201d<\/li><li>\u201cYou\u2019re making this job so much easier for me lately.
