(We don&#8217;t hire that often at Canopy, so it felt a bit of a momentous occasion!) As a part of our <a href=\"https:\/\/canopy.is\/blog\/2019\/06\/20\/how-to-onboard-new-hire\/?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=post&amp;utm_campaign=should-ask-new-employee-1-on-1\">employee onboarding process<\/a>, I&#8217;d set up weekly one-on-one meetings with our new hire with the purpose of having dedicated time set aside to talk through any potential issues, uncover feedback, and discuss her overall career direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As I sat down to <a href=\"https:\/\/canopy.is\/blog\/2018\/01\/11\/the-8-best-questions-to-ask-during-a-one-on-one-meeting\/?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=post&amp;utm_campaign=should-ask-new-employee-1-on-1\">prepare<\/a> for the meeting, here&#8217;s the exact one-on-one meeting <a href=\"https:\/\/canopy.is\/blog\/2018\/01\/11\/the-8-best-questions-to-ask-during-a-one-on-one-meeting\/?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=post&amp;utm_campaign=should-ask-new-employee-1-on-1\">agenda<\/a> I wrote out and asked for her input on&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-personal-connection\">Personal connection<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>How\u2019s life?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What are you excited about lately?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Anything have you worried or down lately?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-issues\">Issues<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>When have you felt frustrated in your first 2 weeks here?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What feels unclear? (E.g., Do you feel you have enough context about the company?)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How clear is &#8220;success&#8221; for you for the next 3 months, next 6 months, and next year?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Are there any decisions you&#8217;re hung up on?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Observations about the team and\/or company culture?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-feedback\">Feedback<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Would you like more or less feedback on your work?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Would you like more or less direction from me?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How is the workload?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What aspect of your job you would like more help or coaching?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What about my management style can I improve?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-career-direction\">Career direction<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>If you could be proud of one accomplishment between now and next year, what would it be?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What\u2019s one thing we could do today to help you with your long term goals?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>At the end of the <a href=\"https:\/\/canopy.is\/m\/training_modules\/4-how-to-hold-effective-1-1-meetings?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=post&amp;utm_campaign=should-ask-new-employee-1-on-1\">one-on-one meeting<\/a>, I then set aside 5 or so minutes to review takeaways and discuss next steps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How&#8217;d the first meeting end up going? Unbelievably well. I was blown away by what I learned. (For example, I had no idea there was a personal outside-of-work issue that had been affecting our new hire!)
