\u201cPeople leave bosses, not companies.\u201d <\/em>We\u2019ve all heard this truism<\/a> in corporate leadership discussions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But how many of us have lived<\/em> that statement? How many of us have left a bad boss? How many of us know what it\u2019s like to work for a good boss versus a bad one?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most of us have had two different types of bosses during our careers: The Good Boss Everyone Wish They Had and The Bad Boss You Don\u2019t Want to Be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Bad Boss<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Recently, I was reminded of the Bad Boss (or The Boss You Don\u2019t Want to Be), when talking to two friends the other week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both of my friends are employees. One works at a large, growing healthcare tech company, and the other at a notable, high-profile nonprofit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both have managers who they cannot stand. Both of their managers have absolutely no idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One friend told me: \u201cThree out of six people on the team have already quit, and two others are on the verge of quitting\u2026 And he has no idea.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The other friend told me: \u201cWe keep losing talented people all the time because of him\u2026 And he has no idea.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both of their managers are good, well-intentioned people. In fact, they\u2019re popular with their respective CEO and Executive Director. They were placed in their management positions because they were strong individual contributors and high performers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But as managers? They are literally driving their own employees away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why do well-intentioned people become bad managers?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

In listening to my friends, I realized their managers have one thing in common:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These bad managers habitually put their own self-interest ahead of their team\u2019s best interest.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

They cover their ass to look good to upper management, even if it comes at the expense of supporting their team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They don\u2019t want to know the truth of how their team feels and employee satisfaction because they\u2019re scared of negative feedback, and how it would personally feel to hear those things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They take credit from others and feel entitled to more privileges, leeway, and benefits because they feel they\u2019ve worked harder than anyone else on their team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They damaged their team\u2019s trust, and as a result, affected employee engagement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sound familiar? Perhaps you yourself have worked with this type of boss, who exhibited some of these beliefs. But don\u2019t be so quick to judge: These people are not evil nor maniacal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Truth be told, the wrong mindset and management is style is easy to succumb to yourself<\/em> if you\u2019re not paying close attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
