I was an employee at another company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As an employee, I remember making a suggestion to our CEO about how we should market a new program\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ll never forget how casually it was brushed aside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I remember asking our CEO a question via email about a new idea I had, and if it was something he\u2019d be open to\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ll never forget that he never responded to my email.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I remember pitching a new approach to thinking about our website to our CEO\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ll never forget how defensive he got about why things were the way things were.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The dismissal, inaction, and defensiveness said to me loud and clear: <em>I don\u2019t want your feedback. I don\u2019t plan to do anything with it.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We often forget as leaders how much our actions say\u200a\u2014\u200aor don\u2019t say.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Suffice to say, I never spoke up and offered honest feedback after those instances, going forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/canopy.is\/blog\/2018\/10\/18\/the-2-things-that-hold-employees-back-from-giving-honest-feedback-at-work\/?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=post&amp;utm_campaign=actions-over-words\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Studies<\/a> have found that the biggest reason for why people don\u2019t speak up at work is because they believe it is futile. Employees don\u2019t think anything will happen with their feedback\u2026 so <a href=\"https:\/\/canopy.is\/blog\/2018\/10\/18\/the-2-things-that-hold-employees-back-from-giving-honest-feedback-at-work\/?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=post&amp;utm_campaign=actions-over-words\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">they don\u2019t give it<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I am living proof of that statistic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want honest feedback, you must act on the feedback you\u2019ve gotten in some way. Prove to employees it\u2019s worth their effort to be honest with you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No matter how many <a href=\"https:\/\/canopy.is\/blog\/2018\/09\/27\/five-ways-to-receive-critical-feedback-well-and-not-get-defensive\/?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=post&amp;utm_campaign=actions-over-words\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">specific questions<\/a> you ask or how well you <a href=\"https:\/\/canopy.is\/blog\/2018\/09\/27\/five-ways-to-receive-critical-feedback-well-and-not-get-defensive\/?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=post&amp;utm_campaign=actions-over-words\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">receive the feedback<\/a>, what you do with that feedback will always carry more weight than anything else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLead by example\u201d or \u201cLead from the front\u201d are common sayings we like to read in management books and nod our heads to.
