What you should do to be a better manager has everything to do with your personal tendencies and habits, your team\u2019s dynamics, and what\u2019s going on with your team in a given moment. It\u2019s about the particular situation. Broadly recommending that you should \u201cmake decisions more quickly\u201d or \u201cfocus on engaging your team\u201d is unhelpful unless those recommendations are calibrated to <em>your<\/em> situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So I\u2019ve compiled together below six of the most common situations managers often find themselves in, and our most popular recommendations for each:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-if-you-re-a-new-manager-slow-down-build-trust-first\"><strong>If you\u2019re a new manager <\/strong>\u2192 <a href=\"https:\/\/knowyourteam.com\/blog\/2018\/10\/12\/new-managers-heres-how-to-run-your-first-team-meeting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/knowyourcompany.com\/learn\/guides\/7-becoming-an-effective-leader\/4-what-to-think-say-do-during-first-meeting-new-manager\/\"><strong>Slow down. Build trust,&nbsp;first.<\/strong><\/a><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>When you\u2019re a new manager, it\u2019s tempting to want to prove your worth. You want your team to know they\u2019re in good hands. However, the best way to establish your legitimacy as a new manager is to build trust, first. Don\u2019t dive headfirst into charting a vision or make any sweeping changes you think are needed. One of the best ways to build trust during your first team meeting is to share who you are\u200a\u2014\u200abut more than just the surface level stuff. Your direct reports want to know: What causes do you believe in? What do you see as your greatest weaknesses? What\u2019s your leadership philosophy? Getting to know the real you, especially during your first meeting as a manager, helps build trust. Here are some other suggestions I have for <a href=\"https:\/\/knowyourteam.com\/blog\/2018\/10\/12\/new-managers-heres-how-to-run-your-first-team-meeting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/knowyourcompany.com\/learn\/guides\/7-becoming-an-effective-leader\/4-what-to-think-say-do-during-first-meeting-new-manager\/\">running your first meeting as a new manager<\/a> and for <a href=\"https:\/\/knowyourteam.com\/blog\/2019\/02\/12\/the-3-most-effective-ways-to-build-trust-as-a-leader\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/blog.knowyourcompany.com\/how-to-repair-the-trust-of-your-team-as-a-leader-7dc894206040\">building trust<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-if-you-hate-delivering-negative-feedback-say-i-m-giving-you-this-feedback-because-i-want-you-to-succeed\"><strong>If you hate delivering negative feedback <\/strong>\u2192 <a href=\"https:\/\/knowyourteam.com\/blog\/2018\/03\/22\/hate-delivering-negative-feedback-at-work-19-phrases-to-help-make-giving-difficult-feedback-easier\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/blog.knowyourcompany.com\/hate-delivering-negative-feedback-at-work-19-phrases-to-help-make-giving-difficult-feedback-easier-cbd2635cdd56\"><strong>Say, \u201cI\u2019m giving you this feedback because I want you to succeed.\u201d<\/strong><\/a><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>You cringe at the thought of having to tell a direct report something they might not want to hear. However, if you focus on <em>why<\/em> you\u2019re giving the person this feedback\u200a\u2014\u200athat you care about them, the company, etc\u200a\u2014\u200ait shows that you\u2019re trying to help, not hurt, them. Here are <a href=\"https:\/\/knowyourteam.com\/blog\/2018\/03\/22\/hate-delivering-negative-feedback-at-work-19-phrases-to-help-make-giving-difficult-feedback-easier\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/blog.knowyourcompany.com\/hate-delivering-negative-feedback-at-work-19-phrases-to-help-make-giving-difficult-feedback-easier-cbd2635cdd56\">19 phrases<\/a> that can help you share critical feedback even if you have a strong aversion to the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-if-you-re-not-sure-how-to-recognize-employees-share-a-customer-review\"><strong>If you\u2019re not sure how to recognize employees <\/strong>\u2192 <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.knowyourcompany.com\/stickers-vs-words-8-ways-to-give-employee-recognition-sincerely-2d69fcb5f4eb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/blog.knowyourcompany.com\/stickers-vs-words-8-ways-to-give-employee-recognition-sincerely-2d69fcb5f4eb\"><strong>Share a customer&nbsp;review<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Employee recognition is all the rage these days\u200a\u2014\u200abut we can often forget how to <em>sincerely<\/em> give employees that recognition. When delivering praise, it can be tempting to offer a gift card or some other incentive. But there are few things as genuine and gratifying for an employee than sharing a positive customer review. That\u2019s not the only way though: Here are <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.knowyourcompany.com\/stickers-vs-words-8-ways-to-give-employee-recognition-sincerely-2d69fcb5f4eb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/blog.knowyourcompany.com\/stickers-vs-words-8-ways-to-give-employee-recognition-sincerely-2d69fcb5f4eb\">8 ideas<\/a> for how you show appreciation toward your team in a meaningful way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-if-you-notice-your-team-hanging-on-to-your-every-word-say-this-is-not-urgent\"><strong>If you notice your team hanging on to your every word <\/strong>\u2192 <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.knowyourcompany.com\/a-leaders-word-is-not-the-word-of-god-here-s-how-to-make-sure-your-team-knows-that-7c787643ef05\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/blog.knowyourcompany.com\/a-leaders-word-is-not-the-word-of-god-here-s-how-to-make-sure-your-team-knows-that-7c787643ef05\"><strong>Say, \u201cThis is not&nbsp;urgent.\u201d<\/strong><\/a><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>As the boss, your words can be taken seriously\u200a\u2014\u200asometimes, too seriously. The best way to mitigate this is to explicitly tell people that your word is not the word of god. One way to do this is to say, \u201cThis is not urgent,\u201d so folks don\u2019t prioritize things they shouldn\u2019t. You can learn about why this happens and another phrase to use to diffuse your word as a leader <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.knowyourcompany.com\/a-leaders-word-is-not-the-word-of-god-here-s-how-to-make-sure-your-team-knows-that-7c787643ef05\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/blog.knowyourcompany.com\/a-leaders-word-is-not-the-word-of-god-here-s-how-to-make-sure-your-team-knows-that-7c787643ef05\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-if-you-tend-to-get-defensive-when-receiving-feedback-assume-positive-intent\"><strong>If you tend to get defensive when receiving feedback <\/strong>\u2192 <a href=\"https:\/\/knowyourcompany.com\/learn\/guides\/3-how-to-receive-feedback\/3-five-ways-to-react-to-negative-feedback-in-the-workplace\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/knowyourcompany.com\/learn\/guides\/3-how-to-receive-feedback\/3-five-ways-to-react-to-negative-feedback-in-the-workplace\/\"><strong>Assume positive&nbsp;intent<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Your reaction to feedback sets the tone in a team for how receptive you are to feedback. So if you react defensively, you discourage your team from ever bringing up feedback to you again. To ease your own defensive tendencies, take a moment to assume that the other person has positive intentions. They\u2019re not out to get you\u200a\u2014\u200athey just want something in the company to change. Here are <a href=\"https:\/\/knowyourcompany.com\/learn\/guides\/3-how-to-receive-feedback\/3-five-ways-to-react-to-negative-feedback-in-the-workplace\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/knowyourcompany.com\/learn\/guides\/3-how-to-receive-feedback\/3-five-ways-to-react-to-negative-feedback-in-the-workplace\/\">four other ways<\/a> to not get defensive while receiving feedback as a manager.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-if-you-re-struggling-to-get-honest-feedback-ask-for-advice-instead-of-feedback\"><strong>If you\u2019re struggling to get honest feedback <\/strong>\u2192 <a href=\"https:\/\/knowyourcompany.com\/learn\/guides\/2-how-to-ask-for-feedback\/2-want-to-get-honest-feedback-from-employees-use-this-one-word\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/knowyourcompany.com\/learn\/guides\/2-how-to-ask-for-feedback\/2-want-to-get-honest-feedback-from-employees-use-this-one-word\/\"><strong>Ask for advice, instead of feedback<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Asking someone for their guidance shows that you trust their expertise or knowledge. The word \u201cfeedback\u201d is loaded with emotional baggage\u200a\u2014\u200ait\u2019s negative, formal, and forced. So while employees are hesitant to give feedback, who doesn\u2019t love to give advice? Switching out that one word can open up lines of communication you might not have otherwise had.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Any of these situations feel familiar? If so, I hope taking the one small step I recommended puts you in better footing as a manager. Remember, you don\u2019t need to start changing a bunch of things, all at once.
